Déjà vu all over again

by Chris Lato

Seriously, how many more of these stories are we going to see in the weeks ahead?

I know, I know – the argument is that the system is working because the bad apples are getting yanked out of the bunch. So how many more bad apples are out there that won’t be found before election day? 15 voter registration workers are ‘implicated’ so far. How many more are out there?

And, just wondering – why are such registration drives needed in the first place? Other than gathering lists of data that will undoubtedly be of great assistance to the partisan groups in question, there is no need for voter registration drives here.

Wisconsin has some of the loosest ‘requirements’ in the nation. After, all, you don’t need a photo ID and you don’t need to register in advance or declare your affiliation with a political party. Just bring a friend on election day to the polling place to vouch for you, and you’re all set.

A legally cast ballot can be disenfranchised whether it was cast by a Republican or a Democrat. In a tight race, all it takes is for a few illegal votes to swing an election. This impacts every voter and every constituent.

The steady leak of stories coming out about tainted voter registration drives shows the system is still in disrepair, no matter how much some would like to convince us that everything is just ducky.
