Atta boy, Attanasio
by Chris Lato
I am by no means a huge follower of major league baseball but it is a still a thrill to see the Milwaukee Brewers back in playoff action for the first time since 1982.
I remember being part of the crowd in ’82 when the Brew Crew beat the California Angels to clinch the spot in the World Series. It was an amazing thing.
A lot of the credit has to go to principal owner Mark Attanasio, who brought a level of enthusiasm to Milwaukee and the team that was lacking under the previous ownership regime. Attanasio wanted to win, and took the steps necessary to make that happen. He is a hands-on owner whose enthusiasm and love of the team is infectious.
No repeat of 2007 here, when the wheels fell off at the end of the season. This time, bold changes were made to stave off disaster.
Less than four years after Attanasio bought the team, the Brewers have gone from MLB wannabes to contenders.
The team has also done an exceptional job of coming up with innovative programs, giveaways and PR that keep the fans interested and always coming back for more. They are bringing the small-market, anything-goes feel of a minor league team to the big leagues.
The Brewers were smart to focus on making it fun to go to the ballpark, with players that are energized, enthusiastic and – dare I say it? – role models in an age of over-pampered, overpaid egomaniacs.
Back in the day there was concern that Miller Park would become a white elephant without a team to get butts in the seats. For now, that is not a problem. Congratulations to the Brewers.
