The curtain is falling…

by Chris Lato

What else can be said about election year 2008?

It will be interesting to see what kind of last-minute shenanigans pop up when the polls are clogged with voters. If turnout is as high as expected, the system will undoubtedly have problems.

Polls are indicating a Barack Obama win, with the only question remaining: how big a blowout, and how long will his coattails stretch? So far that Wisconsin will have a Democratic legislature to go along with its Democratic governor?

Could be - the GOP has just the smallest of advantages in the Assembly, and few are predicting the Republicans will reclaim the state Senate.

Meanwhile, will the last-minute release of Obama’s position on coal be enough to have any impact in some key swing states? It’s awfully last minute, but in some places, those remaining undecideds could head McCain’s way.

It is puzzling to consider that, despite approval ratings that are at historic lows (yes, even lower than President Bush’s ratings), the Democratic-led Congress is poised to make still more gains. But that is the mood of the country right now, and Democrats are far outspending the GOP this year.

We’ll know a heck of a lot more by 10 PM tomorrow night. But there’s no denying this has been a roller-coaster election year that will change the face of American politics.

And, this public service announcement - VOTE.
