Rootin’ for Ryan
by Chris Lato
The groundswell of support keeps on building for Rep. Paul Ryan to step up and play a leadership role in the post-election Republican Party. The Wall Street Journal is among those media outlets that likes what it sees.
The question then becomes: does Ryan want it? And Ryan himself is, so far, saying “No thanks.” Family considerations are said to be playing a key role in his decision. Still, he is not totally shrinking from the spotlight.
Ryan is not the only hope for the GOP, but with talk swirling around who will rebuild the Republican Party after the second electoral spanking in a row, those in Ryan’s class need to step up: young, with ideas to back up the rhetoric, and unafraid to work on appealing to both sides of the aisle (just consider the makeup of Ryan’s district) while sticking to conservative values.
Maybe Ryan needs some time to wrap his head around the leadership concept. He is well liked among Wisconsin Republicans, and those in his district definitely have a favorable view. Ryan is gaining prominence on the national stage, and with old, old hands like Newt Gingrich talking about the future of the party, GOP leadership needs as much new blood as it can get.
On a separate note: better late than never, I guess. Attorney General Van Hollen was tarred and feathered for suggesting voter registrations needed to be reviewed all the way back to January 2006. He was called a partisan hack. But now that the election is over, oddly enough, it looks like he was on the right track after all.
The results of that review should be interesting, to say the least.
