In the news

by Chris Lato

So, Governor Doyle is now refusing to answer questions about missing travel receipts?

The state news media is generally obsessed with the notion of open records in state government, and not without reason. By that standard, shouldn’t the press refuse to take no for an answer and call for full disclosure…and not give up until they get it?

I suppose with unfavorables like these, and an unemployment rate like this, the strategy for the Doyle team is to make an attempt at riding the storm out. At the same time, it is up to the press to not let the administration off the hook when there are legitimate questions about openness and completeness of records that show how the administration spends your tax dollars.

For weeks, the rumor mill has been churning over the possibility that Doyle will take an Obama administration job and disappear. While I have long thought (just a hunch) that his exit from the state was highly likely, the reasons to get while the gettin’ is good keep on piling up. And this stonewalling act won’t endear him to the press…unless, of course, Doyle’s exit stage left is in the offing.  Then it doesn’t really matter.
