NO TXT 4 U

by Chris Lato

I get it. Everyone is pecking away on their iPhones, BlackBerries, and cell phones. It’s the hot, hip new thing that those crazy kids are doing. And people are doing it while driving. For shame.

OK, that’s the premise, but… Is this really needed? Don’t we already have laws on the books addressing distracted driving? With everything going on in Wisconsin, is this really what the Legislature needs to spend hours debating, revising, and focusing on right now? You know, let’s worry instead about focusing on enforcing laws that are already on the books.

Think about it. Why stop here? I have seen women apply makeup while driving. I once saw a guy brushing his teeth, then gargling, and spitting it out. How about reading your mail or getting a little work done before arriving at the office? I will cop to doing a few things I shouldn’t have been doing while behind the wheel. No doubt most of us have, and I bet some of you reading this now have seen all sorts of hilariously, dangerously inappropriate distracted-driving violations while traveling. Time to crack down: the no-reading-the-newspaper-while-driving bill needs to be passed NOW.

Could it be because….this is just headline-grabbing? Nah…..Otherwise, perhaps the Legislature could spend more effort on cleaning up appalling things like this. And this ongoing outrage could use state government’s full attention too. Just sayin’.
